Sissi Nilsson, director of the Kulturhuset at the time of the exhibiition, gave this 35 mm slide to Hannelore Fobo and Evgenij Kozlov in 1993. It is now in their archive.
The "Portrait of Georgy Gurianov" was not published in the catalogue and not exhibited in Stockholm. Having been one of more than twenty paintings Evgenij Kozlov handed to Sergei Bugaev for the exhibtion, it disappeared, like many others, and has first reappeared in the exhibition catalogue of the State Russian Museum "Удар кисти / Brushstroke" (2010) as "Collection Sergei Bugaev". Sergei Bugaev first showed it publicly at the exhibition "ASSA", St. Petersburg, 2013 more >>. Subsequently, Evgenij Kozlov took legal action against S. Buagev reclaiming property from unlawful possession. The court of first instance decided in favour of the plaintiff (November 5, 2013) more >>, the court of appeal reversed the judgement on decided in favour of S. Bugaev more >>. On November 24, 2014, Sergei Bugaev auctioned it at the Moscow auction house "Vladey". Perhaps because of its dubious provenance, it was not sold, but according to S. Bugaev, has since been sold.

Exhibition document with notes by Timur Noviko (cyrillic, in black)
(E-E) Evgenij Kozlov "Портрет Георгия Гурьянова" / "Portrait of Georgy Gurianov"

This document in an A3 format is a black and white copy of photographs with two works by the Evgenij Kozlov preselected for the exhbition "The New from Leningrad". The Russian titles and measurement were probably written by Timur Novikov. The column on the left shows different views of the "Portrait of Georgy Guryanov", the one on top with a work by S. Bugaev attached to it. To the right (top) is (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov's painting "Portrait of Timur on Horseback". It was subsequently printed on the catalogue cover and as a poster for the exhbition, but not exhibited. It has not returned to Evgenij Kozlov and its whereabouts are unknown. To its left is a work by Inal Savchenkov.

At the bottom right are two more works by Evgenij Kozlov not selected for the exhibition. The one on the left is "SIT VENIA VERBO. Традиции ХХ века" (SIT VENIA VERBO. Traditions of the XX Century) from 1983 more >>, on the right is a detail from "Noli me tangere" (1982 possession of the artist) more >>. In 1991, Timur Novikov gave SIT VENIA VERBO and three other works by E. Kozlov that had remained in Novikov's studio after exhibitions to the State Russian Museum, as part of a larger donation of works by the New Artists. The total number the Russian Museum recevied by Timur Novikov is 55 works. Simultaneously, S. Buagev donated 27 works by the New Artists, among them Evgenij Kozlov's "Portrait of Timur Novikov with arms consisting of bones", also stored at Timur Novikov's studio. In 1995 Bugaev admitted that he had not been the owner when he donated it more >>.

The archive of the Kulturhuset has approximately 30 Xerox pages documenting ca. ninety works by the New Artists. In all likelihood, these pages display the 1987 selection of exhibits for "The New from Lenignrad". However, only a few of these works from the original selection were actually shown in 1988.

Sissi Nilsson, director of the Kulturhuset at the time of the exhibition, gave this negative to Evgenij Kozlov and Hannelore Fobo in 1993. It is now in their archive.
A print of this negative was used for the preselection (see picture above).

Although the work was featured on the catalogue cover, poster and invitation card of "De Nya från Leningrad", it is not documented at the exhibition and it whereabouts are unknown.

Kozlov and H. Fobo.

"Star" was exhibited in Stockholm and Liverpool and came to Berlin in the early 1990s. In 2021, it joined the collection of Tate Gallery more>>.

Evgenij Kozlov's "Star" became the poster for the "Perestroika in the Avant Garde" project at the Bluecoat Gallery in Liverpool, 21 January to 4 February, 1989.

To the right Magnus Dahnberg, Cultural Attaché of the Swedish consulate in Leningrad in 1988. The Swedish Consulate supported "The New from Leningrad", the festival of Pop Mekhanika and the New Artists at the Kulturhuset, Stockholm, 1988. The organizers on the Soviet / Russian side were the Ministry of Cultural Affairs (Moscow) and the Komsomol (Leningrad). Location not identified. In 1993, Sissi Nilsson sent a second, almost identical slide to Hannelore Fobo and (E-E) Evgenij Kozlov to Berlin.

Although the painting was printed in the Kulturhuset catalogue (see picture below), it is not sure whether it was actually shown. However, we know that it did travel to the follow-up exhibitions in Denmark and England: we could recover it in London in the early 1990s, where the "rest" of the exhibited works ended up after completing the exhbition tour. In 2021, it joined the collection of Tate Gallery more>>.
