Monoprint frottage is a type of assemblage. Different assemblage techniques were quite common among the New Artists. Ekaterina Andreeva dedicated a whole article to assemblage, published in the catalogue of the New Artists’ 2012 exhibition at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. Assemblage is an ideal approach for combining various semantic elements. |

Hannelore Fobo, 2014
Just like a man.
CHAOSE ART comes into being without any sketch or plan, evolving from element to element, from figure to figure. http://www.e-e.eu/CHAOSE_ART/CHAOSE_ART_text_eng2.htm [...] due to the lack of a compositional plan, the work of CHAOSE ART develops its own composition in the process of creation. This is the most essential point of CHAOSE ART, because it means that, intentionally or unintentionally, each work of CHAOSE ART is oriented towards harmony from the very beginning. http://www.e-e.eu/CHAOSE_ART/CHAOSE_ART_text_eng4.htm Examples of assemblage art in the 2012 catalogue include collages on paper, cardboard, wood, and canvas that feature details made of paper (e.g. newspapers), sometimes painted or supplemented with drawings, fonts and text. Such collages can be found among the works by Oleg Kotelnikov, Timur Novikov, Ivan Sotnikov, Cyril Khazanovich, Vadim Ovchinnikov and Evgenij Kozlov, who also used his own photographs.
The New Artists also used another assemblage technique, although more rarely, namely monoprint frottage. Evgenij Kozlov still has a series of nine graphics created in 1986 using this technique. While frottage is “the technique of transferring the texture or relief of a material onto another surface by rubbing with a blunt pencil” (Russian Wikipedia), monoprint frottage is the transference of printing ink onto blank paper using a chemical composition. It completely preserves the image, but shows it in reverse, like in lithography.
Therefore, this technique requires very careful material handling, as wet and thin paper tears quickly. Besides, during the transference process, the appearance of the print cannot be seen, i.e. it is difficult to determine the intensity of the colours. A completed monoprint frottage is a monotype, a unique product of the printing process. Special features of this style include soft, blurry colours and contours, shifted lines and raster pixels within and around the images. The viewer looks at the image as through a veil. A similar feeling is experienced at the moment of waking up, when dreams suddenly disappear and all the faces, events and scenes instantly disintegrate into separate fragments, losing their inner coherence and meaning.
Each of the nine graphics contains such reminiscences, visual and meaningful moments belonging to the year 1986 – to the last decade of the Soviet period in the history of Russia: models from fashion magazines, pictures of women from some films, armed sailors, a lady dressed in the Baroque style, toy blocks with numbers, a couple dancing the tango, a man-of-war, Leo Tolstoy reading a book, soldiers in uniform, astronauts, the American comic actor Oliver Hardy, a man working out, characters from comic strips and jokes, a gas-mask manual, a cowboy on horseback, a man and a woman embracing each other…
Images of love and war, of Soviet and American popular culture, technical drawings, visual aids… Each of them has its unique, complex visual and emotional value for the artist, each affected his artistic sensibility, penetrated into his inner world, intertwined with others and emerged again, this time through the will of the creator. Thus, we discover what lives in us and what we live with.
Evgenij Kozlov decided on the names for the graphics only after their creation. And it is well known that the name is the key to understanding any work of art.
